LEEUWENBOSCH
THE COUNTRY HOUSE
A FAMILY RICH IN HISTORY

William Fowlds of Long Lee was born in Keighley, Yorkshire in 1838. At 14 years he was apprenticed to a wheelwright to learn the trade. He married Sarah Green at an early age and then set off across the sea to a distant land, South Africa and landed in Algoa Bay in 1857. After a tedious journey by ox wagon in unfamiliar surroundings of wild animals, he arrived at Addo where he very soon found employment with a wagon builder.

William had five sons and two daughters, the eldest of which, also William, bought the farm Leeuwenbosch in 1873. Thereafter it passed on to his only son, Victor, and in time to his son, William Henry, commonly known as Bill.

Bill and his wife Rose have been hosting guests since 1992 and their special brand of hospitality draws guests back year after year to Leeuwenbosch. The return to the family home in 1999 by William and Heidi and their children represents the fifth generation of the Fowlds family on Leeuwenbosch. It continues to be a privilege to share our family’s heritage with you.
